WHIMSICAL TOUCHESIn the 1960s, French artist duo Claude and François-Xavier Lalanne
brought whimsy and surrealism into the art world with their now-
iconic moutons de La Laine — a fantastical flock of life-sized curly
sheep sculptures. Blurring the line between fine art and functional
design, these irresistibly charming creatures were made of bronze,
wool, and wit, standing in stark contrast to the austerity of
modernist sculpture at the time. They weren’t just meant to be
admired; they were meant to be lived with - sat upon, leaned against,
or gathered around, transforming art into a delightful act of
domestic play.
Over the decades, the Lalanne sheep became a symbol of high style
and sophisticated eccentricity, finding homes in the collections of
tastemakers around the world. Most famously the famed clothing
designer, Valentino Garavani keeps a herd of the originals in his ski
chalet in Gstaad, Switzerland - where the snow-white sculptures
blend seamlessly into the alpine landscape. They’ve become
something of a celebrity themselves: guests, designers, and stars can’t
resist snapping a selfie alongside the woolly icons. Half sculpture,
half fantasy, the Lalanne sheep remain the most charmingly surreal
expression of luxury ever to graze a living room.
The Lalanne originals may belong to museums and collectors, but
our charming recreations let you bring a little of their magic - and
mischief - home.
