The Umbo Pedestal / Hallway Console
Designed by Belgian artist Arno Declercq, the Umbo Pedestal is a striking study in primitive geometry and modern sculpture. Its name, Umbo - derived from the Swahili lililopinda, meaning “curved form”- perfectly captures the rhythmic sweep of its carved silhouettes.
Each pedestal is hand-crafted in burned and oiled Iroko, a dense West African hardwood known for its durability and expressive grain. The charring process deepens the wood to a rich blackened tone while emphasizing its natural structure, giving the piece an ancient, architectural presence. Structural elements in burned steel add subtle tension and balance, merging raw materiality with refined craftsmanship.
